Solar energy storage systems typically consist of solar panels, a battery storage system, and an inverter. During the day, solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can be used to power homes or businesses. Any excess electricity generated by the solar panels is stored in the battery storage system for later use.
To maximize the benefits of solar power and ensure a reliable energy supply, storage solutions are essential. Without storage, excess solar energy generated during peak sunlight hours goes unused, while energy demands during night time or overcast days cannot be met by solar panels alone.
According to a recent MIT Energy Initiative Report, sufficient storage contributes to the efficient use of solar energy by creating a balance between supply and demand. Stored energy helps “to keep the lights on and the electricity flowing when the sun isn't shining, and the wind isn't blowing.”
Understand that solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity, but they do not inherently store the energy they generate. To store solar power for later use, you'll need to integrate a separate energy storage system, such as battery banks or grid-tied systems with net metering.
