In Benin, we have introduced a smart street lighting project featuring modular solar streetlights. This intelligent lighting system utilizes IoT technology for remote monitoring and smart adjustment of illumination. It not only delivers a reliable solar lighting solution but also contributes to advanced smart city infrastructure in urban areas.
Local people pay as much as RMB 1.5 for each kilowatt hour of electricity, while their average annual income is only RMB 1,000. 50.9% of the residents cannot afford the electricity. However, the illumination intensity in Benin is large, and the inexhaustible solar energy is one of the best resources in Benin.

Like for most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Benin's energy sector is largely dominated by the use of biomass-based energy sources (59.4%) (Tableau de Bord de l'Energie au Bénin, 2005), followed by petroleum products (38.4%) and, to a lesser degree, electricity (2.2%).
