That cost reduction has made lithium-ion batteries a practical way to store large amounts of electrical energy from renewable resources and has resulted in the development of extremely large grid-scale storage systems. These modern EES systems are characterized by rated power in megawatts (MW) and energy storage capacity in megawatt-hours (MWh).
Currently the world's largest lithium-ion battery, the Moss Landing project in California has a mammoth capacity of 1,600 MWh – about 3.5 times larger than its next biggest rival. To put that in perspective, Moss Landing can provide enough electricity to power over 1 million Californian homes for 4 whole hours when discharging at max capacity!
With an expected capacity of 850 megawatts and 1,680 megawatt-hours, the battery will be able to supply energy to nearly one million homes for one hour. It is designed to stabilize the country's electricity grid, which is under increasing pressure due to the planned shutdown of coal power plants by 2035.
An alternative is to store the energy electrochemically in batteries. For a long time, the cost of battery storage of renewable energy was considered prohibitive. Indeed, a decade ago, the price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of lithium-ion battery storage was around $1,200.
