50MW Photovoltaic Power Plant Project in Kenya-Largest in East
This project carried out in the close cooperation between China and Kenya will build a 50-MW photovoltaic power plant in the East Africa region, and the largest one ever.
The project, the first major solar plant to tap into Kenya's vast solar resources, was connected to the national grid in September 2018 and commissioned in 2019, as the East African nation diversified its power generation to reduce energy costs. This photo taken on Nov. 11, 2018, shows the Garissa Solar Power Plant in northeastern Kenya.
Known as the Garissa Solar Power Plant, the 55 megawatts (MW) facility is the "largest grid-connected solar power plant in east and central Africa," according to Kenya's Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
As of December 2024, Kenya's installed electricity capacity was 3,299.8 megawatts, with 6.5 per cent of that being solar power.
Even many Kenyans connected to the national grid are installing solar systems due to unreliable power supply and expensive bills from Kenya Power. This state-owned power utility has recently caused disruptions in major operations, including Kenya's largest and busiest airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
