The Bokpoort Concentrated Solar Plant (CSP) Project, being contracted in 2014, comprises a solar field, a power block, a thermal energy storage system and related infrastructure such as grid interconnection and water abstraction and treatment systems.
The PV system provided power to the railway system from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. The railway PV systems were able to cover BS-HSR's electricity demand before 6 p.m. The local railway PV generation satisfied 93.4% of the electricity demand in Jiangsu without the assistance of energy storage devices.
The lowest daily PV generation is 1334 MWh, which still covers 60% of the electricity consumption. These results indicate the high potential of the railway PV system to supply power to the HSR and show that the railway system is not highly reliant on the storage system, which undoubtedly cuts the system costs.

Flywheel energy storage systems are suitable and economical when frequent charge and discharge cycles are required. Furthermore, flywheel batteries have high power density and a low environmental footprint. Various techniques are being employed to improve the efficiency of the flywheel, including the use of composite materials.
They can be installed at the transmission or distribution levels or even in remote connected or isolated grids. The modular and distributed architecture of Beacon flywheel energy storage systems allows flexibility in power capacity as well as siting. A single flywheel module easily connects to others, allowing for incremental storage expansion.
In Ontario, Canada, Temporal Power Ltd. has operated a flywheel storage power plant since 2014. It consists of 10 flywheels made of steel. Each flywheel weighs four tons and is 2.5 meters high. The maximum rotational speed is 11,500 rpm. The maximum power is 2 MW. The system is used for frequency regulation.
However, the high cost of purchase and maintenance of solar batteries has been a major hindrance. The project will also contribute to a cleaner energy future for Malawi, reducing reliance on costly diesel generators, cutting carbon emissions by ~10,000 tonnes annually, and unlocking the full uptake of at least 100 MW of variable renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, into the grid.
The Malawi BESS project will guide the scale-up of BESS projects in the Consortium's participating countries. To alleviate energy poverty by 2030 and save a gigaton of CO2 in low and middle-income countries, it is estimated that 90 GW of BESS must be developed to support the required 400 GW of renewable energy.
By breaking ground for this BESS project (and its subsequent completion expected in 2025), Malawi is an important proof point for the BESS Consortium launched by GEAPP at COP28 to secure 5 gigawatts (GW) of BESS commitments in low and middle income countries (LMICs) by the end of 2024.
